Intake Abuse Coordinator

Job Summary

The Intake Worker is responsible for the initial assessment and processing of referrals related to children and families in need of services. This position plays a key role in ensuring that children and families receive timely and appropriate support. The Intake Worker evaluates the nature of referrals, conducts intake interviews, gathers necessary information, and makes recommendations for further action, while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to agency policies and procedures.

Responsibilities will include, but not limited to:

  • Receive and process referrals from families, community members, schools, healthcare providers, and other agencies.
  • Conduct initial assessments to determine the urgency and appropriateness of services based on the referral information.
  • Gather and document detailed information related to the family’s circumstances, including risks, needs, and concerns for the child’s well-being.
  • Ensure all required documentation and consent forms are collected and completed.
  • Screen for eligibility based on the agency’s guidelines and ensure compliance with provincial regulations.
  • Conduct intake interviews with families, children (if applicable), and other relevant parties to assess needs.
  • Establish rapport and a trusting relationship with clients, demonstrating empathy, cultural sensitivity, and respect.
  • Educate families about available services, programs, and their rights and responsibilities.
  • Collaborate with clients to create a plan for further service, intervention, or assessment as necessary.
  • Accurately document all intake activities, including referrals, assessments, interviews, and any follow-up actions.
  • Maintain up-to-date, comprehensive, and confidential client records in compliance with agency policies and Manitoba’s child welfare regulations.
  • Complete initial risk assessments and document any immediate concerns regarding the safety and well-being of the child(ren).
  • Prepare intake summaries and case files for transfer to case managers or other departments within the agency as required.
  • Collaborate with other service providers, community organizations, and external partners to ensure coordinated care and support for families.
  • Provide information on available resources and services, making referrals to relevant agencies or professionals when necessary.
  • Act as a liaison between families and other service providers to facilitate access to services.
  • Ensure culturally appropriate and sensitive practices when engaging with families from diverse cultural backgrounds, respecting family structures, and community values.
  • Participate in training related to cultural competence and incorporate knowledge into daily work practices.
  • Adhere to agency policies, procedures, and ethical guidelines in all aspects of intake work.
  • Ensure compliance with Manitoba’s child welfare standards, legislative requirements, and best practices in service delivery.
  • Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information responsibly, following applicable privacy laws (e.g., Personal Health Information Act).
  • Respond to urgent or emergency situations that require immediate intake services. • Assess and determine immediate safety concerns, escalating issues to appropriate staff or authorities when necessary.
  • Other duties as required and assigned.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Social Work (BSW), Child and Youth Care, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Previous experience in child welfare, family services, social work, or a related field is highly desirable.
  • Experience in working with children, families, or vulnerable populations is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of child protection laws and child welfare services in Manitoba.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and active listening skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and complex situations with professionalism and empathy.
  • Strong organizational skills, with attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Knowledge of community resources and ability to make referrals to appropriate agencies.
  • Cultural competency and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and client management systems.

Work Site Location

The location of this position will be at the Waywayseecappo First Nation Head Office.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

An intake worker in Child and Family Services operates in a mix of office and community environments, requiring mobility for travel to client homes and schools. The role involves both
sitting for documentation and standing for meetings, with occasional lifting of materials. Collaboration with social workers and other professionals is essential, fostering a supportive
atmosphere, while also necessitating quick decision-making in high-stress situations. Flexibility in hours may be required to meet client needs, making adaptability, empathy, and strong
organizational skills key components of the job.
