Cultural Worker
Reporting to the Prevention Supervisor, this position is responsible for providing comprehensive culturally based care and support in the areas of mental wellness, addictions, trauma, sexual abuse, and violence for adults, youth and families. As part of a Land Based Healing Team, the Cultural Worker works closely with the Cultural Practitioners, Clinical Counsellors, and other contracted professionals to support the delivery of a range of land-based healing and aftercare programs and services to individuals and families who are under the care of Waywayseecappo First Nation Child & Family Services.
The primary focus of the Cultural Worker’s role is on the delivery of culturally relevant land based healing within the context of a continuum of care, and provides service from a client centred, family-centred, and community based perspective. This position works in accordance both with the established standards of professional, traditional and cultural practice, and in line with the vision and values of the Waywayseecappo First Nation.
Anishinaabemowin language is required for building family values; the development of cultural teachings, such as land based teachings, ceremonial teachings and infusing kinship family values.
Duties:
Assesses the needs of the individual in order to contribute to the development of counselling and support plans, which includes the person and other supports including family, community, other team members, resource people within Waywayseecappo First Nation;
Contributes to the development, implementation and evaluation of healing plans in conjunction with client, family, Clinical Counselling staff if appropriate and other helping agencies while establishing and maintaining relationships based on respect;
Provides individual, couple, family and group aftercare support, educational sessions,
Provides aftercare support for clients who attend substance misuse/trauma treatment programs, including land-based programming;
Attends case management meetings and case conferences with other care providers and family members as needed;
Participates in the evaluation and ongoing improvement of land-based healing programming.
Supports other members of the land-based healing team in the delivery of culturally based and appropriate prevention programs, services, activities and support to participants of healing camps.
Support the delivery of provider skill camps and mentorship opportunities for staff of other First Nations as required.
Participates in collaborative development of community based aftercare programs bringing knowledge of cultural, land-based and community traditions and methods;
Delivers aftercare services to clients involved with Waywayseecappo land-based programs, to those who may have attended healing camps or treatment delivered by other agencies
Collaborates with other providers to deliver culturally appropriate and land-based options to support individual aftercare goals; and
Participates in the evaluation and ongoing improvement of aftercare services.
Collaborates with community elders, cultural resources people and others;
Participates in team and staff meetings, and engages in on-going team planning, program development and evaluation;
Ensuring all files are properly maintained and kept up to date;
Recording of all communication and correspondence and ensuring it is on the appropriate paper/electronic file and is up to date;
Maintain competency through on-going cultural development activities and act as a resource person to other wellness workers, colleagues, clients and the community; and
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education in Counselling, Psychology, Social Work or similar is an asset
Significant experience supporting individuals, families and communities to access cultural teachings, ceremony and develop plans for traditional healing
Recent experience in community-based mental health and addictions related community outreach, prevention and aftercare support;
Recent experience coordinating and facilitating cultural and land-based activities;
Significant experience facilitating workshops and programming for groups and facilitation of groups.
Recent experience in cultural, land based and clinical modalities in prevention, healing and aftercare support services is an asset;
Experience working in a First Nation community is required.
Knowledge of Indigenous history, residential school impacts and familiarity with Waywayseecappo First Nation history, culture, goals and aspirations is required for success in this position.
